So then I made the robot write an epic poem...
The Saga of Alaric, The Silver Eyed Boy Who Never Gave Up
Salutations my friends!
This morning I explored “ChatGPT”, one of those new written-prompt AI programs, for the first time. I am very wary of AI in general, and wanted to see what it could do, so obviously the first thing I did was make it write an epic poem.
This was through 8 one-line prompts, reallllly simple stuff. The first prompt was "write an epic poem about a boy with silver eyes in the style of edmund spenser"
The results were a bit airy, but I imagine that with more elaborate prompts, the robot could make something brilliant. Even in this excersize, the elegance of the narrative story itself was actually really good.
Though this reads like passages out of a gospel, I didn't write anything hinting at biblical themes in my prompts. Another bit I found through further experiments was that its linguistic style wasn't very mutable, at least in this moment.
There was no Spenser to be found, in flesh or apparition.
However, because the entire mechanic of this new tool is literally LEARNING, I don't doubt that in time, there will come an AI who bears the heads of Homer, Virgil, Sappho, Dante, and all the true Singers of Tales of yore, who will bear a true storytelling acumen and poetic wit, at an INTUITIVE level of mastery.
At this moment in time, I do think there is an ethical place for AI. I think it’s possible for it to be utilitous in providing new ideas to be used strictly for reference by creatives and problem solvers. The method of ‘play’ in the prompt conversation does have a rhythm that allows the exploration of ideas to happen in a unique way.
For my own art (visual, narrative, games, etc), I’m already too oversaturated in influences, and have way too much I’m already trying to channel to try and delegate the task of finding new ideas to an artificial intelligence.
If I had a Nostradamus thought about this whole thing, I’d sum it up in a statement that is for legal purposes, entirely a joke:
Disney will one day buy this machine and destroy the earth.
”Hey Drew What About The Epic of Dreams??”
We’re finalizing the PDF this week! This week I’m finishing all the art, and Thursday night my graphic designer and I are putting the FINAL NAILS IN THE COFFIN. I’m extremely excited, and extremely tired, lol.
So, Expect a ring from us around December 20th-25th ish.
After this, I need to finish up 2 of the stretch goals, which will happen in January, as well as (hopefully) getting the orders in for fulfillment.
”Hey Drew What Happened To WIYQ Weekly??”
When we started WIYQ Weekly, it was a really helpful tool to keep me on track. It was one of the most fun times I’ve had producing any kind of content, really because I didn’t need to produce anything for it - just hanging out with my best friend talking about the past week of work and play.
Later on, it started to become something that wanted more attention, and the Curse of Scheduling(TM) began mucking things up on my end. After The Epic of Dreams is fulfilled, expect more content from Cameron and I in 2023.
“Hey Drew What About Harrowings 4??“
Harrowings 4 is gonna be awesome. I’m still not sure what it’s going to be, or if it’ll be ready for this next ZQ season, but we’re going to put it out after everything with The Epic of Dreams release is finished. Philosophy? Sasquatches? Green Knights? Who knows!
Finish it with an art dump? Why not!
